What is involved?

Ask and you will receive; search and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Mt. 7, 7-9).

These words of Jesus form much of the basis of prayer and activity of his followers in every generation. They need to be heard and listened to by us today, especially in the area of marriage and family life.

We are very conscious of the increasing incidence of marriage break-up in our society. Most of us are touched at a personal level at least through family and friends by the pain and trauma that this causes to couples and their children.

We can despair that anything can be done to turn things around. If we believe in the promise of Jesus there is a great deal we can do – we can pray!

William Barclay, a well- known Scripture scholar suggests that a more relevant translation for this passage is: “Keep on asking and you will receive; keep on searching and you will find; keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you”.

Through a parish community praying for a day each month for marriage and family life great things can and will happen.

Our prayer however is not to convince God to do things for marriage and family life. It is rather to convince us to do what God wants for every married couple and for every family in their love for each other.

And what God wants is everything that will bring life and joy into our homes and our parish and our world.

Through this monthly day of prayer other things will emerge that will be helpful for building up these relationships; other opportunities can be created for the health and well-being of families; other occasions can be established for celebrating the love that bonds us together with each other and with God.
