Dealing with Difficulties

Marriage is a journey, not a destination. It is a journey towards each other. It is a journey with each other. It is a journey, like every other journey of life, which has all kinds of ups and downs. But because of the vows that a couple make to each other it is a journey that each one is pledged to travel ‘all the days of my life’. That is the greatest strength of marriage.

There are all kinds of problems and difficulties that arise in the course of a marriage.

There are the ordinary everyday misunderstandings that occur from time to time. These should be dealt with as quickly as possible so that they don’t fester and become something different and worse. Good communication is all that is needed for this. It might be helpful to use the short course that is in the section of the website entitled Growing together in Marriage.

For some couples there may be more serious problems that occur in their marriage. These may need a third person, preferably a counsellor, to help sort them out. Couples are often reluctant to go to a counsellor but this is a great mistake. ACCORD is a very good source of counsellors. They have centres all over Ireland and are well worth contacting.

Another very good service is called Retrouvaille a word that means Rediscovery. This group offers a residential weekend and four follow up Sundays. This course is meant for couples who may haave very serious problems, even to the point of separation, but who want to salvage their marriage.

Marriages also come to an end. Death of one of the spouses is the most common reason for this. But separation and divorce are other reasons. There is an excellent service for those who are going through the trauma of these endings. It is called the Beginning Experience.
